Simple solutions - CITY OF HEROES

Timpane's picture

Not to be a simpleton, but I'm having a simple problem installing City of Heroes. I get the game all installed fine, but when it tries to connect to the server, it simply can't.

I know Matt is a Playa, and he also has a hardware firewall. He must have fixed this at some point. I simply don't know what simple things I am talking about, so forgive simple ignorance, but help me Matty-wan-kenobi, you're my only hope.

City of Heroes Firewall Settings

That's very odd that it simply cannot connect. I will say, though, that once you can connect, you must play on the Champion server with me :) I have very few friends playing it anymore (real-life friends), but I have many "virtual friends" who I have no idea who they are in real life.

The most likely cause of your problems is that you positively need to have any "software firewall" on your machine turned off, and you have to reboot before you try to download the patch (in the launcher, the blue boxy window that comes up with news). On both of my machines, downloading that initial patch was incredibly slow.

The second most likely cause is that it's actually hanging attempting to start the connection. This is frequently a result of not having the latest DirectX version installed, and if you have an Nvidia video card, you should download the latest drivers from Nvidia's web site.

You also need to make sure you meet the minimum system requirements printed on the bottom of the box, particularly the video ram on your video card (at least 32 megabytes).

After you've tried that (rebooting, updating DirectX, updating video card drivers), let me know if it's working for you. Here are the characters on Champion I currently play regularly:

  • Vicious Grandma, Science Empathy/Psionic Defender
  • Perl, Technology Spines/Dark Scrapper
  • Happy Medium, Magic Invulnerability/Energy Melee Tanker
  • Gravity Greene, Technology Gravity/Force Field Controller
  • Angry Bumpkin, Natural Fiery Aura/Battle Axe Tanker

The coolest thing is the "Sidekick/Exemplar" system. It doesn't matter what level I am -- I can make you a sidekick so that we can play together and have a reasonably similar experience. But I'll gladly make a new character to keep the same level (about) as yours :)

Crash Log

From your crash log, it looks like you have an outdated video and/or sound driver. Download the latest driver for your video card (identified in the dxdiag output, look at the model number) at http://www.s3graphics.com/

Don't feel bad Justin, he's my only hope for anything related to computers as well. Thank goodness I married a geek (though I didn't know it at the time).

What would we do without him? I don't know.--

Yeah, video card

So for those inevitable inquisitive visitors, it appears to be that his S3 video card is unsuppoted. NCSoft supports precisely two brands of video cards for city of heroes: Nvidia Geforce 2 and above, or ATI Radeon 8500 and above. That's it, that's all. If it works on something other than that, count yourself lucky.

I count myself lucky: it runs fine, if slightly slowly, on my ATI Mobility Radeon 7500.

It really isnt the video card

I hate too disagree with the "matthew" here but I had almost the exact same problem.
What was happening was that the CoH patcher would come on and patch and when I hit the "I agree" button too play the game would stop.
Now the COH techs said the same things at first, that is was a hardware issue but after looking at my system specs they had to admit that wasnt the case.
I was able to play once or twice. each time was after a full software cleaning and removal. Seems that CoH uses the default windows browser ( more on that in a few).
A few weeks ago I had a hard drive failure and added a new 160 gig HD. a clean install of windows and to test what I was reading the first game I loaded was CoH. It ran great, I loved the game it was fun and very cool visually. I had also placed the new mircosoft antispyware into my system.
The next couple of days I reloaded various of my other games and visited websites, the antispyware worked great..but imagine my surprise when I tryed to log into CoH and it crashed again.
I did a full check on my drivers and a spyware scan and nothing nana zip.

Checking again the forums it seems that if ANY other game or function uses the default windows browser, guess what wont work.
I have spent more time trying to play this game then any other in my entire computer gaming experience. I have played online for 7 years.

I have moved past frustration to anger. City of Heros WAS a game I really wanted to play. But now I feel that Cryptic and NC Soft stole my money and time. I wont buy anything from them ever and take most reviews now with the idea that the reviwer is using a perfect closed system and not living in the real world.

They have said this is an issue with a small percentage of people but they have said that since last May. It may be they have no idea how many are effected.

Actually...

Actually, it was the video card.

Justin replaced it with a supported card (only ATI and nVidia are supported), and all is well. I played with him online yesterday.

However, I am saddened that a potential player was turned away due to technical difficulties. I've run into the same situation with Everquest 2: it doesn't run on my PC. I think I know what the problem is, but it would be too expensive to fix, so EQ2 languishes in its box. Darn.

COH Updater

I'm having a similar problem. I've been playing COH since beta, and it's always worked fine for me. I recently built a new computer, and installing COH on it is turning into an extremely difficult process. When I go to run it, the COH updater comes up, but it only downloads the patches at 2-3k/sec. That means the 150k patch it's working on is gonna take about 13 hours to download. Seeing how I have a broadband connection, and I've verified my download speeds are normal (350-450k/sec), I find this very puzzling.

If it's going to take all day just to download a 150M patch...well I got better ways to spend my time and money.

COH Forums

Your technical issue is probably best answered in the City of Heroes Tech Support Forum. I bet you a nickel that, if you post a traceroute to the coh servers, the output of a dxdiag, and an explanation of your problem to that forum, you'll have an answer within 3 days.

If you don't get an answer, just let me know the exact message you posted, and I'll Paypal you that nickel. I've done it before :)

Mobility Radeon 7500

I was going to buy City of Heroes, but I have a Mobility Radeon 7500 so I hesitated. You think with plenty of hardrive space and 764 RAM i'd be alright with my 7500?

matthew's picture

Works fine

It works fine, but with the following qualifications:
1. Performance is slow,
2. It looks like crap,
3. Playing on large teams it lags terribly

Other than that, go for it :) Not like you can change the video card in your laptop anyway.

With Justin on this...

I'm with Justin on this. I had a great time in the game world, got several characters up to the highest levels of the game... and then the game just "ended" for me, and I was done. Really, if more of my friends played, I'd have probably kept playing.

But, as the famous Buddy/Incrediboy/Syndrome once said, "That ship has sailed".

Vidoe card?

I have been having a problem with City of Heroes since I bought it. In game mode it lags and freezes every time I'm in there weather I'm on a team or just walking down the street. Just about every time I'm trying to leave the hospital I get stuck the door refuses to open. I have wrote the support team over and over again and the issue has not been resolved. I seen the message you wrote about video card driver needing installation. So what I did was tried that it told me that I didn't need it. The support has sent me a link for a a video card and the same thing that my video card is more updated then the one they are trying to give me or my computer says that it is not needed. What do I do?

Try the City of Heroes Forums

I'd say try the City of Heroes forums instead of this place :)

Video Card recommendations

I currently have an ATI Radeon x550 256mb card in my desktop. The graphics are ok with the rare lag when I play CoH/CoV. A buddy of mine brought his computer over and I was amazed at how much smoother the graphics were and the higher resolution. His card was only 128mb and I don't recall the brand...think it was Nvidia. Anyhow, I've cranked up all the settings using the ATI catalyst control center and in the game itself as well, but to no avail. I'm still unable to get the lvl of graphics my friend has. So, I'm looking to upgrade my card. What suggestions are there?

matthew's picture

Nvidia

Any current Nvidia card with 512MB+ of RAM will do fine for CoH. More than fine, really. The best upgrade you can make to your machine to make the game run smooth, after upgrading the video card, is more RAM. If you don't have 2GB or more, it will be choppy here and there.

or...

You can quit playing because youre tired of spending forever traveling and going into caves and/or buildings to fight anonymous foes.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to upgrade my RAM as I only have 1gig and its the cheaper option at this time.

matthew's picture

Also important...

In this day of increasing clock speeds, a clock speed near 2GHz (Pentium M/Core Duo) or 4GHz (Pentium 4) is important for good performance.

A 1GHz Pentium 3 will hang in there, but be terribly choppy.

I have a dsl 384kbps line useally it downloads a file at 30kbps but it downloads the initial patch at 2.0kbps please send alternative.

problems

Well I have a laptop with the ATI Radeon Xpress 1100, it runs with 512 MB ram, and I have a GB of ram. I can login just fine but either I have a horrible connection or somethings wrong because I'm not running smooth at all. The game looks just fine, but as far as trying to play not so much so. I haven't been able to figure out what is wrong with it and wondered if it might be ram or graphics card. If you could possibly help it would be greatly appreciated.

I have had this game...but i bought a new one and installed on new computer...now while I'm entering my login info...my mouse icon goes away, and i can get on and stuff...but i can't do very well with out my little pointer thing...please help...any ideas?

matthew's picture

Your best bet...

Your best bet is to log in to the City of Heroes message boards:

http://boards.cityofheroes.com/

Go into the tech support room and ask there. You'll get lots of advice. The first piece will be "update your video driver".

Solution for extremely slow download speed with updater.

I looked in the forums and found this page referenced for something else:

http://www.plaync.com/us/support/doc_4807.html

It explains a way to hardcode the port used for patching... Prior to hardcoding this port, I was getting a wopping 5.2kb/sec. After hardcoding, I'm getting 70k/sec

city of heroes/villans

ok soo it downloaded fine and everything but when i made my guy .. he was black i couldnt see him...soo i was like hmm thats odd.. then i go to play and everythings a black outline..i asked people in the game and they said i should download directx..
and thats what im doing now.. but was just wanting to know if that would help any..and if not what should i get you think.. oh by the way i have a dell laptop inspiron 1501 with windows vista and shiz

Timpane's picture

heh..

Wait til you play and realize its just a bunch of running to caves and warehouses to kill minions, then a predictable boss..

I joke.. it ruled my life for a while.. but ultimately, it is undone by these things..

Ditto

Ruled my life for a while. Gave it up. Went back to it. Gave it up again. Went back to it. Well, it's spring/summer now, and model airplanes own me, so I don't play at the moment.
