For those of you who are only interested in getting to the moral of the story, there are two:
The other day, my wife's passing hand, combined with some static buildup, managed to shock my aging, decrepit laptop enough that the network card and PCMCIA slot failed to work for the next hour and a half. Eventually, they "came back" on their own (several reboots later), after a great deal of monkeying, shaking, powering-off, unplugging, removing batteries, and general hair-pulling and curse-slinging.
I realized then that my old, reliable Sony Vaio PCG-Z505SX had seen better days. It never has really been a "desktop replacement", but much more a "desktop adjunct". The thing I really like about it is the size. It's small -- only a 12" screen -- and the keys are in intuitive locations. It has a positive "feel" why you type on the keyboard, and that's 90% of what I do: typing. Well, if you exclude mousing.
When I want to play games, I go sit in front of my big desktop computer and play. I also use that same workstation to record music, and frequently I've found that drivers or updates which I need to play a given game conflict with what I need to run my digital recording gear. It sucks, but recording wins out over games. I have a few still sitting in their boxes because I found that, in order to run them, I had to upgrade drivers which would then cause my recording rig to not work right. Darn. They remain unplayed.
Anyway, I got laptop-hungry. This laptop broke, and I realized that it was last mass-produced in 1999. That's a good run for a piece of hardware, and other than having to replace the hard drive a year ago, it's been really good to me. All good things must end, and I suspect this recent ethernet/PC card failure is the first of many failures to come. Besides, it can only fit 128MB of RAM. I have more RAM than that on the video card of my desktop PC. It does make it a somewhat slow, frustrating experience to use, ameliorated only by the fact that I have it running GNU/Linux, which handles aging, under-sized hardware much more gracefully than Windows XP.
Here's where the real adventure begins. I spent some time early this morning, over lunch, and this evening investigating laptop options. I checked out the most recent models, read a bunch of reviews, and decided what kinds of features I wanted. Initially, I really wanted an Apple PowerBook, but I abandoned that plan. As much as I love my Mac upstairs, I realized that I could replace my 4-year-old recording rig with a new laptop. I don't want to re-invest the money in a Mac-based recording rig, really. It was too expensive, and took too much time to build up, for me to want to do it all over again on a different software platform.
Besides, there's that whole learning-curve thing. I'm comfortable with Cakewalk Sonar. I really don't want to learn ProTools if I can avoid it.
I found some great deals on eBay. Being somewhat naive about these things, I followed the instruction on the posting which said, "I have a buy-it-now price for this auction; contact me at b_blancoo0@yahoo.com for the price".
I did so. Here's the e-mail exchange. I quickly became very leery. See if you can spot what's wrong with his responses...

Subject: Re: Buy it now on Alienware Area51m 3.2GHz P4 1GB RAM 60GB HDI apologize for my incredulity, but that seems to be about $1,000 less than competing similar laptops. How do you sell them at such a low price? Is this simply a great deal for the ethically-challenged?
In addition, your eBay account seems to have been suspended due to your request for offline "buy it now" requests. Do you plan to reinstate it? I would feel more comfortable making a purchase knowing that your account is in good standing.

Yep. 100% criminal. Important tip for would-be criminals: if a customer asks why something is such a good deal, telling them the price is good because "i need this money for my soon life" is probably not a good gambit. This would be laughable if it weren't for the next closed-bid seller whom I contacted regarding the sale of a laptop who was so remarkably similar.

Subject: Re: Question for item #5567966663 - BRAND NEW ALIENWARE AREA-51M 7700 3.2, WI...HI
First I want to tell you that my laptop are brand new, unopened box
all accessories included and also an international warranty .
My price is the best you could get: 900USD(not euro), including the
shipping and insurance taxes. We will pay them because the package
will be delivered from Europe.
As delivery service we use UPS2days air service or overnight (with insurance and
15 days return policy), because it's the faster. And if you will have
a quick payment, we must also have a quick delivery. So that's why we
use as a payment method Western Union money transfer, the fastest and
also very secure way of sending money. I just open a electronics company here in europe
If i will make with you a good deal, you will recommend me ,maybe ,to your friends or to other persons. For me it is very important to have permanent deals on ebay,
any negatice deal will not make good to me,That explain the price
So, if you agree with my terms I'm sure that we can close the deal as soon as possible.
Waiting your quick answer right now,THANK YOU
Another important tip for would-be criminals: Asking people to send money internationally via Western Union is almost a sure tip-off that this is a version of the Spanish Prisoner, a.k.a. the Nigerian Scam. Of course, hundreds of people fall for this every year, to the tune of thousands and possibly millions of dollars...
I did not purchase from either seller. I value my money. Here are my suggestions when you make ebay purchases:
I despise criminals. My greatest concern is simply that I've given these scammers my real-life email address, and I'm really not that tough to locate. Ahh, well, there's no such thing as privacy anyways.

Thought for the moment:
Of course there's no reason for it, it's just our policy.
Comments
The scam continues
The scam continues. It looks like "Alienware" is a big scammer turn-on.
The clues it's a scam:
1. The listing asks you to email him, rather than use eBay's "ask seller a question" method. A prominent email address is a big clue it's a scammer phishing for leads.
2. Check all his items. The listing pattern is really weird all of a sudden. It looks like the user (http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZmicklammQQhtZ-1) isn't even aware that his account has been usurped. Suddenly he's listing really expensive consumer electronics of tons of different, very popular types, where before he only dealt in used and rare CDs.
I emailed the seller, and he confirmed that he didn't list these expensive consumer electronics; his account had been hacked. He de-listed the bogus items and changed his password. Just doing my part to help humanity!
(Calling it a "hacked" account is just being generous. eBay is very secure. It's just that people fall for these password-phishing scams, the scammer logs in as them, and nobody wants to admit they've been had.)

Signal #1
The most important, easily-read sign that you are being scammed:
The scammer asks for the money via Western Union.
Seriously, the moment you hear this from anyone, the alarm bells should go off. Just Say NO to sending money internationally via Western Union to people you don't know. Seriously, following that one rule will save you a lot of grief.
PayPal, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express all offer significant buyer protection via chargebacks. No such thing via Western Union. I will occasionally buy things from within the United States via cashier's check, money order, or Western Union, but never internationally.

Add another to the scammers e-mail addy's
I did some research and spoke with him, almost fell for it, sent him my address, and didn't go further when I noticed Ebay pulled him. So hers the new address:
Mafoame@aol.com
And heres the new address he asks you to wire money to:
All you have to do is to find a western union agent and wire the money. Please go on personal and wire the money.
The information you need is:
first name:EMANUEL DORIN
last name ZOLTOREANU
address:STR. TABEREI ,NR. 34.B ,BL.2
city:TULCEA
zip: 820237
country:ROMANIA
Please be precise with my first and last name.
Thanks and mail me with your address after you wire the money so I can begin the delivery
My stupid thing done was to send him my address, but he can't do much with just my address.
Hope this helps with geting him away, I reported him to FTC, local Auth, FBI, and the Ebay in Canada.
Thanks for saving me from Emanuel Dorin Zoltoreanu
Without going into the detail on the emails I received from Zoltoreanu, I will tell you they are almost identical to what is already posted here. I almost chomped at the bit and took the chance.
I want to thank you for having this valuable blog and want to know if there is anything else I can do in the way of reporting this scam. Should I report it to eBay (they don't do much if anything)? The FBI? etc....(?)
Once again, thanks!
Tudor victor Alienware Laptops
This guy is still at it, I thought I was getting a bargin, but somthing did not sound right with his emails. and when I got that one from admin@safeserverebay.com I almost fell for it. Until I found this website. What can be done about guys like this, this must be a crime.
A crime
As a matter of fact, it is. However, you won't get any U.S. agencies involved unless the sum of the damage, to you, is greater than $5,000. In that case, the Secret Service might get interested.
You'll note that most of these guys are operating under that amount. Not that they are afraid of the Secret Service or Interpol, but they want to keep "below the radar" and make the losses to you enough that they make a tidy profit, but little enough that you aren't motivated to go on an international vendetta against them.

News from Mr Scammer
Today I had my first experience for this scammer, while looking for a good canon professionnal Digital Camera. Same method exactly goes for me. The guy has an excellent mobility I think, as I saw during the course of the afternoon his auction cancelled and created again three times, and the last time was on a "Power Seller" account with a real website (I told the online assistance of this account about it), and this seller had a 7000+ credit account with 98% good rates... Frightening, ain't it ? Anyway here a few email addresses he used, and excerpts from e-mail that looks juuuuust like yours.
3.THE WAY TO PAY ---as a payment method i have
chosen WesternUnion's services because they always served our
interests in a professional manner and helped us gain buyers. i consider
promptitude a vital condition on the modern e-Commerce markets and a

victor tudor strikes again...
are these romanian guys idiot because they are trying to scam with the same way. Each person that i have send an e-mail to buy mobile phone, had responded me with same "copyied&pasted" e-mail by only changing a few details.
I had received an e-mail :
Hi,
My price is the best you could get: 140 gbp/unit, including the
shipping and insurance taxes.About shipping it is my responsibility to delivery the goods safely to your home. We can do it one of two ways. Either way I will pay for all related shipping expenses. I can send the package: -UPS overnight or -FedEX overnight. It will take one day and a half for the package to arrive to you.
Regards,
Alina Elvis
but when we are getting to talk about details ;
Hi there,
SHIPMENT - This is something you shouldn't worry about because I believe it is my responsibility to delivery the goods safely to your home. We can do it one of two ways. Either way I will pay for all related shipping expenses. I can send the package: -UPS overnight or -FedEX overnight. It will take one day and a half for the package to arrive to you. I will always pay for insurance in case any damage occurs during the handling and shipping, so we will both be protected in case of damage
HOW TO PAY -We have chosen Bank Transfer or MoneyGramTransfer's as a payment method because they have always served our needs in a professional manner. We considerpromptness a vital condition of the modern e-Commerce market.Let me know if we have a deal or no if yes just reply with your full informations and i will give you mine for payment.
Thanks,
Same draft... but not the final one
MoneyGram is my prefered manner because is very fastely so here are my full informations:
First Name:Nicu Elvis
Last Name:Ene
Address:Street: Tudor Vladimirescu
City:Gradinari
Country:Romania
ok sir..i will wait to confirm the transfer with the scanned paper from your bank ,so can i start the delivery and i guess you will get my product within 30 hours...
Thanks and i hope you will contact me in the future after this deal for anothers deals.
I wait your email!
here we have the new details of the victor tudor. and he is not only scamming me but also trying to make fun of me by giving his address as his name...
but there is one important point that makes me angry is the guy gave a call to me from +40721737973.i just search from the net and i learned that +40 is the country code and 721 is a romanian gsm operator (http://kropla.com/city_romania.htm)
so please be careful about these guy and never forget that nothing is cheaper than its own price except it has a handicap.
Shills...
You need to be aware that, in some cases, the names given are "shills". They are innocent or complicit parties who will pick up the drop for the scammer.
I've become aware that there are many ways these shills are recruited. The basic approach is an offer for part of the "take", but in more extreme cases these criminals are kidnapping family members and threatening to kill them unless the shill does what the scammer wants.
Of course, there are the other classic gambits: debts owed, broken kneecaps, that kind of thing. But these scammers are simply organized crime. I will avoid passing judgment on the people who are stuck with the job of picking up the money, because what's going to happen is that their name will be "ruined" with Western Union, unable to ever pick up money again. That poor bastard will be the one who's hooked for the crime, too.
So the criminals will thank the shill, give him his daughter back, and move on to the next poor victim. Remember: the name for the WU transfer isn't necessarily the criminal. He's just a confederate, willingly or unwillingly recruited because the scammer's name is mud.

Apple Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5 Ghz & Apple Cinema 30'' SCAM
I was looking at a iMacG5 2.5GHrz with a 30inch screen on ebay. The users e-mail is or should I say "was" Kry911@aol.com. First of all maybe try and use an e-mail that doesn't sound like your a scam artist already. Anyway there were a few major things that were obvious this wasn't real.
I knew the auction was fake because there is no way you can purcahse this item for 1200USD. The item is worth almost 10000. Anyway, here's his info and what he sent me. I just strung him along until I got his details. So here's another one to beware of.
I thought they had spell check in Romania, apparently not... who knew. (you'll see what I mean when you read below) I am kidding. Anyways. Cheers for this blog. I typed in the false ebay email and came here. One thing I thought was pretty funny is the ebay reference is on this page too, apparently he's always buying 5 items a week, he must be loaded or....yeah he's fake. Here's a final hint, if it's thousands of dollars cheaper then it noramally is, it's not going to happen. Why ebay hasn't shut these people down is unknown to me, makes their name look bad.
So I guess just keep it real people!

I got the same e-mail by
I got the same e-mail by contacting the name listed on eBay. I found out that in general, these accounts have been recently hijacked (compare the items being sold with the items they have sold), and that the people are too lazy to change the contact info on the eBay account. The easiest way to kill these scams in eBay is to contact the seller, let them know their account has been hijacked, and tell them to contact eBay. eBay takes time, and even if they kill one auction, there's the good chance they'll miss all of the other ones. In addition, send an e-mail to all the people who have bid on any of the items in question. My only regret is that eBay only allows you to send 10 e-mails in a day (or some other unit of time).
I think an easier way to convince these people to stop the scam is to refuse to pay outside of eBay in any way other than COD. Either that or send them false Western Union statements (see www.empiresecurity.com for an example)
