Unusually High Google Placement

paul@murphymaphia.com's picture

Matt explain for us why blog entries (those from Barnson.org, MurphyMaphia.com among others) rank so high on Google search results.
You've discussed this before a little on here about how your One-Handed Shoe Tying article ranked so high. I've noticed on my blog that my wife's recipe for raspberry vinagrette dressing also ranks tops on a Google search.
My question is, why?

Syndication

If you turned on the Drupal syndication module, drupal.org links to your blog in their sidebar, which in turn causes other blogs to ramp you up automatically. Drupal blogs are going like gangbusters -- it's becoming the most popular blogging tool behind Movable Type very quickly -- and there copious auto-linking ranks pages up really fast.

That's basically it: by syndicating your content, you end up boosting Google's rank of it a bit. If you want to avoid high-ranking Google placement on your pages, just turn off the "Drupal Directory" feature in the drupal settings page (administer-settings-drupal-Drupal Directory).

There are also "reputation" things, where if a site has garnered a high "reputation" (generally by having lots of links to it), then its links to other sites are also ranked higher. However, Google's algorithm for doing this is both somewhat arbitrary and a heavily-guarded secret. Google for "Pagerank Controversy" for some background.

Face it guys, Barnson.org and MurphyMaphia are the center of the blogosphere. You're like the Kevin Bacon of blogs.

Good Idea!

I think I'll start posting some of my favorite low carb recipes and see how many hits they get! Then when I can't find my recipe in my kitchen, I have it archived on barnson.org. --
