OBSERVATIONS and UPDATES

Hey.. some interesting observations.

I am NOT a drug user, and I have a test to prove it.

I have decided that if you recieve a letter bashing you, it should go with the grain of salt that the person writing it is the type of person who would write a bashing letter.

I have decided that if you get a 1500 dollar phone bill, the phone company thinks its Christmas, will not help you.. and should be dumped for a better phone company.

I have learned that J.J. Abhrams will NOT be directing the Star Trek script he is writing. He will produce

I have decided that living down the street from your Mom can be crazy, but is worth it.

I have decided that I MUST buy Buffy Season 8 – THE COMIC BOOK – Written by Joss Whedon, when it comes out next month.

I have learned this: “ba ba ba”

Finally, I have learned that life is more fun when Barnsonians post… so what have you learned lately..?

What makes a successful marriage

So here’s a question for you guys: what, in your opinion, makes for a happy marriage?

So here’s a question for you guys: what, in your opinion, makes for a happy marriage?

I ask this because I found myself thinking of one of Sammy G’s relatives over this weekend. Sammy, his Mom, and I took a trip to new Jersey to check out Rutgers. (I shoulda’ gone there! Or maybe UMBC… anyway…) At one point, we had a big dinner and as we were walking out, this immensely fat old dude (Sammy’s relative) quips, “This is the secret to long life: lots of cigars, lots of good food, and lots of good friends. These health nuts, they run every day. They lift weights. They eat right. They still die at thirty-five of a heart attack. Me, I smoke a cigar every day, have never run a day in my life, drink too much, and I’m old.” (I don’t remember how old he was then, but it seemed immensely old to me.)

That ties in, for me, because genetics play such a huge role in an individual’s lifespan. Many people have perfect teeth, not because they take care of them, but because their genes create good teeth without regard for hygiene. Many people live a long time not due to their diet and exercise choices, but because of their genetic composition.

Admittedly, lifestyle plays an important role, but I can’t help but wonder: Could genetics also play an important role in fidelity and marital satisfaction? I’m happy and fairly satisfied with my relationship with my wife, and I can’t help but wonder why I seem to have an easier time remaining content with a monogamous relationship than some others.

Leaving seems to be..

After 3 years at my current company Technica Corp. I have decided that it is time for me to seek other adventures. I have received and accepted an offer at Deloitte & Touche. I will be working in the same Project management consulting role. I am looking forward to the new challenges and the change of scenery. It has been interesting how much I had to toil over the decision to leave. The people I work with are some of the best I have ever worked with. Unfortunately, Technica does not have a true blue PM practice which is why I decided to look elsewhere. I found looking for a new job while having a secure job still in place an interesting position to be in. Typically I am or about to be laid off which usually adds a great deal more stress to teh situation. I kind of prefer the non-stress method. It enabled me to be able to actually review offers and reject ones that I was not happy with.

The next couple weeks should prove to be interesting as I transition out of this job and into the other.

Cheap, Safe Cancer Treatment

The net is abuzz this week with news about an un-patented drug called “DCA” (dichloroacetic acid or dichloroacetate). It has been used until now for treatment of rare metabolic disorders involving malfunctioning mitochondria. Recent animal tests with human cancers have shown that DCA reactivates cancer’s deactivated mitochondria, causing cancer cells to have a more normal lifespan compared to the tissues they sprang from. It turns out the mitochondria play a critical role in determining how long a particular cell lives, and cancer cells shut their mitochondria off as they become starved for resources due to their enormous growth.

There’s only one problem with DCA: it’s in the public domain. That means no large pharmaceutical companies are going to be funding human research and FDA approval of the drug. Now, I’m a big fan of open source in software. Could open-source medicine be the next big trend? Let’s find out… donation instructions are listed in the article.

Arghhh… HELP!`

I am troubleshooting my kids Desktop PC. They have this irritating message popping up trying to DOS the PC stating that

SAService.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.

This is generating itself once every 2 seconds (aprox.).

Anyone know anything that I can do to fix.

I am running McAfee, and it isn’t finding anything and the firewall is still intact…

Remote Access

Does anyone have any advice about remote access software?

Thinking it beneficial to access my office desktop from home, I was ready to sign up for a web-based remote access solution. That is, until I saw Go2MyPC wanted $240 a year. Yikes! I came across I’m InTouch which looks good at $100.

Basically, I’m hoping someone with experience can offer advice.
