So I’m facing unemployment again (my last day on my current contract is July 2). Anybody know of a place needing a good UNIX administrator?
We’re even considering relocation this time! Christy told me, “if it comes down to a choice of you taking a job out of state, or being unemployed for an extended period of time, I’d rather move than be unemployed.”
So, if you’re aware of anybody looking for a UNIX admin with light programming experience in Perl, shell, and Python, have them check out my resume on this site. I also do SANS, Windows (in moderation), and when it comes to Internet infrastructure, that’s one of my specialties. I particularly love work with Apache web server and acceleration/load-balancing techniques.
In fact, if any of you are game, I’d love snail-mails of newspaper clippings from want ads, or links to relevant online want ads in region-specific papers. For the first time in seven years, I bought a Sunday Deseret News yesterday to look at their diminutive Computer jobs column. Who knows what will come next?

Word documents
And I discover, yet again, that even for adverts for UNIX admins, they want your resume in Microsoft WORD format. Gah. Time to re-send those thirty+ resumes, I guess, in a format other than PDF.
PDF turns out to be a fine format, but because recruiters can’t strip all your personal information out of it to bundle your resume together with others, they will just ignore you.
A part of me feels weird that when I hand over a resume to a recruiter, they are going to remove all personally-identifiable information from it, and re-send my stuff on. But I guess they have formatting standards they want to stick with. It would be funny if my personal preference for standards-compliant, cross-platform readable documents is what’s hamstrung my efforts so far.

WORD
Often recruiters have software that actually scans your resume for keywords.
This is helpful to then when they get hundreds of resumes.. the software scans for specific words, then it forwards the resumes with enough of them to a real person to review.
Dead
I’ve been playing this game for three years now (looking for work, and playing with the damn PDFs), and excepting the odd job here and there, I’ve been out of work the entire time. If you can find a computing position outside of Utah, take it.
Sr. Network Engineer position
Sinuhe, do you have enough experience to be considered Sr.? I just got a listing in my inbox for a 12-month contract position asking for “Sr. Network Engineers” — but really meaning systems administrators with reasonable experience. I have the gut feeling the pay is going to be $7.00-$10.00 an hour less than what I’m accustomed to; dunno if you’re interested or not.
I’ll forward you the listing.
