The Conspiracy Theory

And so it goes… I recieved a link from a buddy of mine that talks about the 9/11 attack on the pentagon. It has an interesting look at the attack and how there was little to no wreckage found of the airliner that crashed into the Pentagon. Hope you fins it as thought provoking as i did.

  1. The basic problem…

The basic problem that I have with the “conspiracy theory” of the Pentagon strike are:

    • We have the passenger list.
    • Those people have not been heard from or seen since the attack.
    • Unless Flight 77 crashed somewhere else, or the jet was bizarrely landed somewhere and all those people kept in hiding for the last three years, it’s reasonable to assume that flight was the one that punched the hole in the side of the Pentagon.

This video reminds me starkly of one of the early beheadings on television (isn’t it bizarre that I can’t even remember the name, because there have been so many now?). There were conspiracy theories flying around the Blogosphere about how, if you watch the video (I didn’t), the terrorist’s bodies blocked the view of the beheading, so maybe it was all actually a frame-up.

The conspiracy theorists created a good story, but the fact is, authorities found the guy’s body, and found the head in a freezer several weeks later. Any theory about how it was “framed” or “set up” were irrelevant in light of physical evidence to the contrary.

Occam’s Razor comes into play on this one, and the fact that UA lost an airliner, the fact that none of the passengers apparently survived, and the flight trajectory neatly fit the facts.

The basic gist of the conspiracy theories seem to say “look, the lawn is pristine! It didn’t mar the ground!”

What these theorists fail to realize is that the Pentagon is a huge building. The hole in the wall is pretty clearly the size of the fuselage of the plane in question. There was a massive explosion when it hit, and it hit going full-bore, some 200MPH less than the speed of sound. I wouldn’t expect anything more than fragmentary wreckage from that kind of impact, with virtually none of it behind the airplane. The pristine lawn makes perfect sense, because every piece, part, and fluid on that plane had a velocity of just under 600MPH and had already passed the lawn on impact.

    It’s basic physics.

Coincidences happen every day, and that there are a few weird ones with this crash, in my opinion, is no reason to bother with conspiracy theories about it. We know the conspiracy, we know who claimed responsibility, and the people claimed to have been aboard that flight are, apparently, all dead. What can be clearer than that?

    1. more on that…

To play devils advocate, The plane could have crashed elsewhere. Not sure as to where or how to cover up the crash, but I am sure it would be possible given the motivation.

I am not sure of which beheading video you are talking about. I have seen a few of them (unfortunately) and they all seem pretty straight forward with the way they are executed (play on words). Berg was the first one, and most notable to many people.

The only thing that still stumps me from watching that slide show, is that there is a noticible non-existance of wreckage. I would think that there would be more notable pieces to be seen. Tail Section or wing fragments.

      Just a thought…

  2. Conspiracy theory

I kind of agree with matt.. but the video is still compelling.

    But, here’s a conspiracy theory for you…

Anyone remember that plane that crashed in Queens, NY just a couple short months after 9/11?

Isn’t it strange that no plane that size had ever crashed in the city of NY… and that this one would so soon after 9/11?

Isn’t it strange that the “reason” is that the tail just came off.. something that has never been heard of before or since.

Does it not seem more likely that the government, in an attempt to save the flailing, failing Airline industry would call it an accident and not what seems far more likely.. a surface to air missile?

    Just a thought.

    1. actually

Actually, tail failure is common on smaller planes and not unheard of on larger planes. The gist of it is this. A plane has a simple failure on a flight control elsewhere (a flap on one wing, loss of hydraulic pressure, somthing like that) that causes the plane to assume a flight attitude that places undue stress on the aircraft. Then, when the force of gravity, 3 GE jet engines, and a full load of fuel take their toll. The weakest point on the craft fails. In many cases this is the large seam where the fuselage meets the tail section. I’m sure none of these things seem unusual to someone who sees plane crashes every day. (not me, btw)

I think the bottom line is this. We have lots of terms for things we don’t understand; demons, God, poltergeist, the devil, the government covering up facts, miracles, UFO, whatever. All it means is that the viewer didn’t know the logical explanation for the events not that there were no logical explanations.

  3. Duh

I don’t find this peice of trash compelling at all. So what if a bunch of civilians thought it sounded like a missle? Do they know what a missle sounds like? What kind of missle? As for the argument that the craft didn’t seem to air traffic controllers to fly like a commercial jet. Uhhh, it wasn’t being flown on a commercial route by a commercial pilot. I sat next to an airline pilot on my last flight home from Buffalo last month. In the course of the conversation he told me that commercial airliners are some of the most capable aircraft around. Many are capable of supersonic flight (FAA regulation prohibit it because sonic booms are annoying), all could be flown through basic acrobatic manuevers, loops, rolls, s rolls, etc. In fact, I have seen video of a 727 barrell rolling over Peuget Sound the day it was introduced to the public. As I watch that video the only thing I am convinced of is that the creators didn’t want to think about any of those things when they made the video.

    1. So, Kim…

      So Kim:

Who are you, anyway? Are you part of the conspiracy?

Maybe you could register on the site and send me a private message to let me know. I like to “promote” people I know, to allow them to post blogs and have fewer restrictions on the site.
