Needin Whedon Part 4: Comics

Joss Whedon. You’ve heard me rave about Angel, Buffy, and Firefly. But here’s an unexpected part four.

OH, and at the bottom, there’s a link to the SERENITY trailer… if youre good.

I’ve been away, and had very little time for fun except my continuing love for comics. And there are two that I would recommend highly.

FIRST: Astonishing X-Men, written by: Joss Whedon.

Yup, the Buffy creator has been writing this new X-Book for a year or so, and let me tell you, it is the best its ever been. This is the best stuff since the Claremont/Byrne days of the early 80’s, complete with really engaging storylines, great art, and true “Whedonisms” (example: WHITE QUEEN to BEAST, regarding how CYCLOPS will never truly love her because of his love for the late JEAN GREY – “Looks, superpowers, the best body money can buy and I still rate below a corpse”, or WOLVIE’S “I really like beer” in the middle of a battle.)

So, yeah. Astonishing X-Men is fantastic, and if you are an X-fan or a Joss fan, you’re missing out if you don’t read it.

SECOND: “FRAY” Been missing the Buffyverse?

Joss has written a Graphic novel about a slayer a couple hundred years in the future – its called “FRAY”, and it is true Buffyverse with a bit of a “Star Wars” twist. There is the typical Whedonism stuff (“You hid me in da mout wid a girder…” “You were supposed to duck”) and the usual betrayal, shock and surprise. It also has a fast paced sci-fi feel and a lot of heart.

So, yeah… pick it up!

Oh, and expect a fifth posting in September after “Serenity” comes out. Meanwhile, check out the SERENITY TRAILER!

Enjoy.

  1. Alliance… A Lion

My all-time favorite weird Firefly “Whedon” moments:

Early: Where’s your sister? Simon: Are you Alliance? Early: Am I a lion? Simon: What? Early: I don’t think of myself as a lion. You might as well, though. I have a mighty roar. Simon: I said Alliance. Early: Oh. I thought… Simon: No, I was… Early: That’s weird. (shakes head)

Oh, and here are a few others I like 🙂

Mal: Which one you figure tracked us? Zoe: The ugly one, sir. Mal: Could you be more specific?

Mal (talking to Jayne when Jayne offers him a rifle for his wife): Well, my days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle.

Jayne (talking about River and Simon having been kidnapped): Dear diary, Today I was pompous and my sister was crazy. Today, we were kidnapped by hill folk never to be seen again. It was the best day ever.

(In this scene, Mal and Zoe were pretending to be a young couple, after robbing a train, looking for a particular man who’d offered Mal a job) Sheriff: Blew the back of his head right off. Mal: So, would his job be open?

Simon: You are my beautiful sister. River: I threw up on your bed. Simon: Yep. Definitely my sister.

Wash: I mean, I’m the one she swore to love, honor and obey. Mal: Listen… She swore to obey? Wash: Well, no, not… But that’s just my point! You she obeys! She obeys you! There’s obeying going on right under my nose!

Zoe: Preacher, don’t the Bible have some pretty specific things to say about killing? Book: Quite specific. It is, however, somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps.

Simon (after learning that Jayne was immortalized with a statue): You know, I’ve saved lives. Dozens. Maybe hundreds. I reattached a girl’s leg. Her whole leg. She named her hamster after me. I got a hamster. He drops a box of money, he gets a town. Kaylee: Hamsters is nice. Simon: To Jayne! The box-dropping, man-ape-gone-wrong-thing.

      1. Watched it…

Watched it several times, at least once with Christy. The full-screen version you can watch using iTunes is even better 🙂
