What an ending to a great game !!! 20 – 17 Redskins over Seattle. What a great day – Awesome weather, Great Redskin football, sound of kids playing in the other room – Can life get any better than this….

    1. Patience has its rewards

I’m not going to endorse all this talk around town about ‘bandwagons’ and ‘playoffs’ but, 3-0 with one Dallas victory under our belt, is pretty sweet. And maybe next time I get an e-mail from the team about extra seats still available for a game, with this winning streak in mind, I won’t be so quick to turn it down, regardless of the outrageous prices they offer.

  1. Hand of Gold

Pretty upset after Ian Gold managed to get his mangy paw on that 2-point conversion. Almost 4-0!

    1. Bow our heads

I am still in Mourning, Hopefully the Redskins and Lavar can settle their differences and get him back in the game. Without a decent pass rush, we are hurting.

      1. Let’s Not Even talk about the Caps

At times, it’s awful watching them skate. They’re playing like a minor league team. The lack of talent is apparent.

        1. You gotta give these boys

You gotta give these boys some time, Sammy. The average NHL career-age for the team is around two years. They’re young, and they’re learning. That was the whole point of the fire sale last season.

I was at the game with Tampa Bay last Sunday, and sure they took 40 shots on goal to our 14. But we still won, unbelievably, and it’s still fun to watch them play. And we’re only 3-4, which is not bad so far considering that last season we were dead last in the league.

I think the average Caps fan has accepted that we will in no way be contenders this year. We do, however, have a collection of upcoming rookies who are all primed to explode over the next few years. So what we’re watching right now might be akin to watching a future Olympic sprinter taking his first steps as a child.

The talent is there, the *heart* is finally there, and the experience will come… just give it time.

Plus, it is clear to me that Christ has finally returned and has chosen as His avatar a young teenager from Russia named Ovechkin…

          1. They Don’t Want To Compete

Rowan, as much as I love your comments, I have to disagree with you about the direction of the Caps.

When the Caps traded Peter Bondra, it sealed my belief that Ted Leonsis doesn’t want to compete at the highest level. I’ve followed the Caps my entire life, and when you usher players like Peter Bondra and Calle Johannsen out the door, players who are in their prime and don’t want to leave the team, then it’s obvious that Ted is not putting the team in the best position to win. Ted bought the Caps only after he failed to buy the Wizards. Ted is a marketing guru (AOL) and I believe became upset that he couldn’t figure out how to market the team to a broader DC audience. As a result, Ted was an owner that desperately needed the lockout so that players’ salaries would come down.

The average Caps fan accepted years ago that they (the Caps) will not be contenders. The *heart* was there for many years, and it was traded away. The Caps do not have a collection of upcoming rookies ready to explode; they just have a collection of rookies. It was evident when Bondra returned with the Thrashers to (sorry!) thrash the Caps with an offensive explosion against the sorry Caps defense.

With all the offseason free agent shuffle, the only player the Caps secured was Jeff Friesen, currently -2. Meanwhile, Jagr is tied for the league lead in points. The Caps currently have the worst defense in the NHL. They have given up the most goals.

Because of all this, my family gave up its season tickets. What’s the point of seeing minor league hockey at major league prices?

I still listen to all the Caps games online. I hope the team does well, and I root for them, but have accepted that the team has made personnel decisions that will prevent it from winning consistently.

          2. Now That The Season Is Over

Now that the season is over…

For the 2005-06 season, the Caps finished with the NHL’s fourth-worst record. They had the second-worst defense in the league, one of two teams that allowed more than 300 goals. I don’t have official stats on their penalty killing unit, but their special teams looked atrocious all year.

Obviously, Alexander Ovechkin is amazing. By finishing third in the league in goals and points he single-handedly made the Caps exciting. If it wasn’t for him, I’m not sure the Caps would have fielded consistently above 50% of audience capacity at the games. That guy is phenomenal. Every time he touches the puck I inch forward in my seat.

While on the subject of fan attendance, this past season broke all NHL attendance records. A total of 20,854,169 and per-game average of 16,955 attended the NHL’s 1,230 games, 1.2% ahead of the previous record season of 2001-02 (20,614,613 and 16,760). In all, NHL teams played to 91.7% of capacity. While many teams broke their individual fan records, I’m sure the Caps had dismal figures. I’m always looking at the total attendance line in the Caps’ boxscore, and they seemed to be in the low-60%s for most of the season.

I stand by my feeling that Ted Leonsis gave up on the team as they kept losing money, and wishes that he hadn’t become owner of a sports franchise in a football-crazed town.

  2. Any way to win

Does anyone think the Skins have a good chance to win tomorrow in Seattle? I foresee Seattle putting up 4 touchdowns and the Redskins not able to manage more than 3. It would be amazing if the Redskins win and advance to the NFC Championship.

We get no media coverage out here. Is DC going crazy with playoff rush?
