TBS, formerly known as the Superstation, is running a mini-marathon of LOTR movies this weekend – Fellowship and Two Towers. I caught a very funny commercial this morning promoting the weekend’s movies, featuring some cleverly edited together frames of Frodo and Sam, set to the song Secret Lovers. There was a killer shot of Gandalf with this bemused look on his face. I guess it was the kind of thing that’s funny at 6:30 in the morning.
Oddly Compelling Commercial

This reminds me…
This reminds me very much of the The Very Secret Diaries of Cassandra Claire. You perv hobbit fancier.
Unfortunate that the clip won’t play for me, though.

Sigh…
The great English writers, like Tolkien, Lewis, Joyce, were able to understand the difference between homoeroticism and homosexuality…
But I suppose such distinctions are a little too fine for our coarser American sensibilities…
I don’t get it…
What’s the difference?

Homoeroticism is when two
Homoeroticism is when two people of the same sex (usually men, in British fantasy) establish a close personal bond, coming to love one another in a deep, mutually protective and mutually supportive way. Sam and Frodo being a prime example.
Homosexuality is when two people of the same gender are sexually attracted to each other.
Of course, the two frequently go hand in hand (ie most gay relationships). But that doesn’t mean that one always leads to the other.
