A very novel approach to talking about copyright and fair use:

  1. Brilliant!

I can only imagine the hours of splicing that must have taken…

Using this as a springboard… how long do people feel is reasonable for copyright to last, in pertaining to artistic works or invention, personal or corporate?

    1. Its an interesting question

Artistic works are a creation of an individual. As long as the individual is alive, it is fair that no one else should profit from the works of the individual without the individual getting a cut. We see all the time these early recording pioneers whose songs made millions for the companies and sometimes other artists, but not a dime for the original writer.

We get into trouble when it becomes a corporate issue. For instance, Disney has Mickey Mouse and other characters trademarked, so that it can continue to exclusively use the image for as long as the company exists. It seems patently against the spirit of cultural progression that no one can try to do it better. Remember, many of Shakespeare’s gretestplays were based on others’ creative works.
