The New Frankie Fan Club

So over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been listening to more Big-Band music. Dean Martin. Frank Sinatra. Michael Bublé. And I’m finding that, far from feeling like an old fart, I’m energized by it. I started my day with “I’ve Got You Under My Skin”, and listened to more hits from the forties — and new music in that style — for the rest of the day.

Dang, it was good. Sure, it’s music older than that which my parents grew up with. Maybe my grandparents would have been into it. But I just periodically find myself tired of the same-old-same-old pop/country/rock/metal that I’ve listened to in new incarnations since I was a teenager, and long for something more interesting.

So what music have you recently discovered — or rediscovered — that has you tapping your toes, humming at work, and waking up in the morning dancing in front of the bathroom mirror?

  1. Musical Trainwreck

My musical tastes have always been all over the board. Lately I too have been listening to music from the Rat pack. Frank and Dean are my two favorites. Michael Buble is pretty good, actually I was listening to one of his CD’s as I was getting stuff ready before bed last night. Some of the other artists / groups I have been listening to are:

A modern Jazz artist named Hiromi Harry Connick Jr. – I have been enjoying the new NOLA album. Classic Eric Clapton (when he was with Crème)

But then I slide off and I like listening to

    Eminem Metallica Aerosmith

Then there is always station 113 on XM (I think that is the Pops Station) for my classical infusion. 

Like I said, kind of all over the place. A lot of what I am listening to is dependant on my mood.

Harry Connick Jr. – I have been enjoying the new NOLA album.

Oh, I didn’t realize he had a new one out. I’ll have to give it a listen!

But then I slide off and I like listening to

One must wonder what you are sliding off *of*…

I just glanced at my playlist to see what I had on there… and a small sample:

Jewel, Everclear, Frank Sinatra, Green Day, Dean Martin, Michael Buble, Evanescence, Linkin Park, Ryan Shupe and the Rubber Band, Timpane, Smash Mouth, Rush, Cold Play, Cold Blood, Panic! at the Disco, U2, Kansas, Kenny Loggins, Billy Joel, Elton John…

It’s like my tastes have just gotten eclectic as I got older. For my dad, it was all easy-listening, all the time, and “turn down that noise!” for my music. On the other hand, I walk into my son’s room to listen to him blasting Creed, and I might sit and listen for a while before asking him to turn it down so that I can talk to him!

      1. Oh my NOLA

This is an album that Harry Connick put out to help the musicians and music from New Orleans. There are 4 original songs on the album and the rest are covers of classic artists from that area. It is a fun album to listen to.

I don’t do whole albums on my iPod for more than a week or so, just the stuff I really like right now… and as mentioned, I change my tastes daily and weekly. Timpane’s current contributions include:

Not Myself Today Crawl Starbucks Nation Glad You’re Gone

I do rotate others in occasionally when I get bored 🙂 My neighbor was moaning about her sister-in-law, so I played her “Glad You’re Gone” and she cheered up. I got the title right on that one, no? It got ripped to my Shuffle and I never see the title, I just hear the music.

          1. Review…

            …still awaiting the CD review…

Well, I’ll need to sit down and do my traditional “rip everything apart and pick out every flaw” session then? Good heavens, as I’m getting older I’m becoming less of a musician and more of a critic.

          2. As soon as…

Well, as soon as I am able to listen to it… lol… the lack of media makes listening hard to do… he he he…

            Happy Friday !

          3. Two thumbs way way up… (Hades – Disney Hercules)

Track 1 – Glad you’re Gone – I like the track, it is a pretty solid piece.

Track 2 – Presidentialized – I like this tune too. I think it could use a little Eminem-esque flavor. Eminem has a tone to his voice where he still has the inflection as if he is talking. I think if you could add a little more of this kind of inflection it would make this an even better tune. Some examples of Eminem tunes that i can think of off the top of my head are: – Kill you – Yellow Brick Road – One Shot 2 Shot – Renegade. (mind you these are mearly examples of his inflection through his songs and not for content)

Track 3 – Cecilia Brown -Not a bad tune.

            Track 4 – Masterpiece – Nice rock-ish ballad

Track 5 – Gesthemane – I like this track as well, I think it is a phase i am in right now. I think this one could use some Eminem-esque kind of groove / intonation to it. I can hear it in your voice, I think the track would sound hot. Still like it non-the-less

Track 6 – Chrysalis and Buterfly – Nice track –

Tack 7 – Song for Liam – I wish i had put something like this together for my girls. I had always thought about putting a letter together when they were born to express myself to them, but never got around to it. Nice…

Track 8 – Ad Infinitum – Nice groove to this track.

            Track 3×3 – Three – 🙂

Track 10 – Signoff – heh – fun – reminds me of the floogie song that WS did.

Have you ever thought about getting a studio band together to make a recording of these? I think they would take on a whole other level with live instruments v. electronic.

            Justin,

I am impressed. I really liked the album. The guys in my car pool liked most of the tracks as well. Best Wishes – Lemme know if you ever want a bass player / singer for something 😉

          4. lookathat!

            Thanks!! tee hee.

I have thought about a studio band.. but money and time and bleh.. still.. some hot bass licks would be awesome. (Dude, I should totally have you and Sammy come down and do Dueling basses.. primus style.

I digress. Thanks for the review. Makes me happy that you listened.

Fun note.. The album is on itunes now (Sammy’s is in the mail tonight) People have purchased a few copies over at Amiestreet, “Presidentialized” played on XM, and “Gethsemane” is #3 on the rap/hip-hop showcase chart on songvault.
