MOVIE FUN from COMIC-CON

I’ve been keeping up on upcoming movie excitement.. and there are some cool things coming up!!

1) INDIANA JONES AND THE… and then Spielberg’s mic conveniently cut out. But its coming next summer.. Here’s a pic..

They say this one acknowledges his age.. is set in the 50s, and will use only minimal CGI. Beaucoup stunts. More info at indianajones.com

2) STAR TREK Here’s what we know. Nimoy is in. Shatner is, for now, out. It features an old Spock, but not Kirk, and chronicles the earliest meeting between Kirk and spock. Zachary Quinto (Heroes) will be playing the younger Spock. J.J. Abrams is directing. What I think this means is that it will not be a complete reboot, but will at least respect current TREK continuity, in which Kirk is Dead.

3) THE DARK KNIGHT The Batman sequel is currently shooting in Chicago.. Heath Ledger (Brokeback Mountain, A Knights Tale) is the Joker. Like Batman begins, this is a dark take.. and these pics are exciting. Next Summer is the release. Also look for Harvey Dent (Two Face).

4) IRON MAN The classic Marvel Character comes to life with Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role of Tony Stark.. a wealthy disabled man who becomes a superhero by building himself a robotic suit.

5) The Mummy 3 No pics here.. but Jet Li as an asian Mummy? Sounds like FUN!

6) Finally.. SWEENEY TODD They are making my favorite musical into a movie. Check out the poster. “Swing your razor high.. Sweeney.” Tim Burton Directing Jack Sparrow, Bellatrix La Strange, Severus Snape, and Rupert Giles. SWEET!

This year (or 2) is gonna be FUN!

  1. Sweeney Todd

Sweeney Todd looks pretty interesting. The Batman franchise — even though “Batman Begins” breathed new life into it — is just stale for me. I’ll look forward without too much hope to “Iron Man”…

  2. I personally can’t wait for

I personally can’t wait for the new star trek movie, to bad they are not including Bill Shatner in it tho

    1. Still a chance..

Further Comic-Con reports say that they’re trying to find a way to fit him in (no fat jokes please)

      But remember.. Kirk is Dead.

      1. yeah I know kirk is dead,

yeah I know kirk is dead, but this is star trek, spock died and yet he is still around, nothing is impossible, and they could have spock and kirk in some era before generations, then we are all good

        1. resurrection

Ack.. but they took an entire movie to get spock back.. and thats kind of not the point of this film.

As for pre-generations… Shat looks SO much older now (its been 13 years) – either way.. new Trek will be fun.

  3. Sweeney Todd is huge news

That is totally huge news. Crazy coincidence — I’ve been listening to the 2005 OBCR soundtrack with Lupone and Cervais (killer orchestration for smaller stage ensemble) and getting back into the flow of the show. Not sure how this will play as a movie since the show is basically a Sondheim opera, which means his music and his melodies at all points?

    1. movie musicals..

I’ve really liked the current crop of movie musicals..(excluding rent), with a real fondness for moulin rouge and phantom.

I have faith that Tim Burton can pull this off.

      1. Knowing Broadway Musical Trivia doesn’t make me gay…

So the other day I was wearing a salmon-colored polo shirt when my data center team went out to lunch. We ended up talking about Broadway musicals. I hummed a few bars from ‘Sunrise, Sunset’ in response to a question, and then answered some trivia regarding Phantom and Les Miserables. The Resident Token Gay Guy (RTGG) exclaimed, “Wait, I’m the only gay guy here and you’re the one who knows musicals? Sing a few bars of ‘On My Own'” for me.

So I did. I discovered that my latest diabolical scheme to improve my voice by singing enthusiastically along with the radio whenever possible has paid off; I had the range to sing the first few lines of Eponine’s tune in falsetto in the correct key. I stopped when I saw the shocked expressions and listened to the stunned silence of my co-workers.

        “What?” I asked.

“You might field for our team,” replied Straight Co-Worker (SCW), “but you sound like you bat for the other side.”

“Just because I know a few Broadway Musicals doesn’t make me gay,” I replied.

“Sing a few bars from ‘Leader of the House’,” replied the RTGG.

“It’s ‘Master of the House’,” I responded quickly, without thinking.

“I rest my case,” said SCW.

ANYWAY, my whole point with that story was that I really dug how they did “Phantom”… it rocked well. “Rent” irritated me from the first few moments, and I never finished it after watching the introduction. “Moulin Rouge” is my current favorite musical on the small screen.

Dang, we could have a thread exclusively about DVD musicals…

    Oh, man…

“A feature film adaptation of Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd began principal production on February 5, 2007. Tim Burton directs from a screenplay by John Logan. It stars Johnny Depp as Sweeney Todd, Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett, Alan Rickman as Judge Turpin, Sacha Baron Cohen as Signor Adolfo Pirelli, Laura Michelle Kelly as the Beggar Woman, and Timothy Spall as Beadle Bamford. The Dreamworks/Warner Bros. production is slated for release on December 21, 2007.”

If they’re smart, and I hope they are, they give Lansbury a small, swift cameo.
