So in a discussion forum, I recently came across a link to the Flame Warriors. This is one man’s attempt to caricature the various personality types who engage in online debates.
What type of Flame Warrior are you? I think I’m an Eagle Scout, with an occasional Jekyll and Hyde with some Bliss Ninny thrown in.
And then I see myself in Furious Typer’s shoes… or maybe Grammarian, or Diplomat, with a hint of Pithy Phrase…

Maybe..
Palooka, Jekyll and Hyde. I dinno, is there one for someone who gets easily drawn in to certain discussions and then take 2 hours writing a response.. but only sometimes?

See, I’d say…
I’d say you’re part of the swarm. As a friend of Admin (me), you frequently argue with our our resident Capitalista (Daniel).
I think that you’ve transformed from an almost-furious typer to a true Kung Fu Master. You understand when to fight your battles now, and choose them wisely when you know you can win, or at least argue them to a stalemate. You throw grenades very rarely, but when you do so, it is with precision and subtlety.
That site is so cool. I’m going to start telling people in mailing lists which role they are playing 🙂

Ahem…
That’s funny, I thought I was God. I’m disappointed that you couldn’t tell.
Brilliant site.

How can you succeed if you don’t believe in yourself?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Sorry, but that was funny.

Diplomat
I guess I’d be Diplomat, Propeller Head, not quite a Philosopher but more than a Profundus Maximus. I’m a Jack of All Trades, I know a little about everything but nothing very well, except for IT stuff.

Such a wonderful ordinance…
Mmmmmmmm…. grenades…..
Grenade-worthy topics!
I see lots of grenade-worthy topics around here:
* Religion in Government * Free trade vs. Social Obligation * Why Christians Suck * Why Atheists Suck * Outsourcing * And, weirdly, esoteric technical subjects
Hey, so let’s model our economy after China’s, and make an atheist theocracy where the Christians are in internment camps and free trade is legislated into oblivion while everybody sets up DNS servers! Whaddy’a think?

Not ‘internment camps’ …
Better to call them ‘specialized work environments’ or ‘relaxation zones.’ It’s all about how you frame the debate.
All worthy topics
Those are grenade worthy. But they are also, for the most part, actual topics worthy of genuine debate. We are all affected by the degree of outsourcing, or free trade, or religion in government there is in our society.
What makes me laugh the most (which is why I suppose I consider myself an Ereodite Troller) is the massive bombs you can drop on topics that don’t really affect anyone at all!
Such topics would include: Star Trek (Picard’s WAY cooler than Kirk) The new Star Wars films (The Phantom Menace wasn’t that bad) Anything related to comics (Batman’s way cooler than Superman!)
I mean, my God, even the age old PC/Mac/Unix flame war has some practical use to it, but belligerent fandom?
Not like I can talk, of course. I’m just as guilty; I submit as evidence a conversation I had with a friend a few years back:
ME: I’m not that angry a person. I don’t really get angry.
MICHELLE: I could totally make you angry.
ME: I don’t think so. I’m in a pretty good mood.
MICHELLE: Buffy sucks.
ME: ……I hope you die, b@*#$.
But The Sisko Was Way Cooler Than Picard
Just to stoke the flame war fires…
Second that..
Or rather that DS9 was a better show.
