Several of us are on Netflix, no? Jon and I have friended each other via Netflix… go to the “Friends” panel, then click “invite friends”. On that page is a link you can paste here to be friended to exchange movie preferences, notes, reviews, etc.
It’s been really cool, Jon has suggested a few movies to me that I would not otherwise have watched. We can see what one another have rented recently (which is entertaining and voyeuristic on its own) and see one another’s ratings. My queue has expanded enormously after looking at Jon’s Netflix ratings.

Blockbuster
I love the idea.. but I’m a blockbuster online guy. Same price.. same idea.. but I can return my movies to the store if I want, and get any movie in the store free right there..
So I went with that.. but I’d love to hear these suggestions..

Netflix
I canceled my Netflix membership after I got four DVDs in a row that were too scratched to play. Has anyone else had that problem?

Nope..

Netflix gives downloads
I see where Netflix is going to start rolling out the ability to rent and watch movies on a computer (instead of a set-top) via digital download.
Missed that…
I missed that, do you have a URI?
iTunes already offers this service for $10 a movie. I’ve thought about buying a few movies with the $30 in iTunes gift certificates we received over Christmas holiday, but haven’t done it yet due to fear of lock-in.

Here is some info on that…
From CNN
Under Netflix’s most popular $17.99 monthly package, subscribers will receive 18 hours of Internet viewing time.
When i was loged in to netflix i was able to find a link under the “my account” tab. It basically said that it won’t be enabled till June 2007.
yeah but
Yeah, but… do people really enjoy watching movies on a laptop? I don’t.

HD converter
I’ve seen two friends who have well-made solutions to allow them to enjoy their digital media… uhmm…. digitally.
* Justin. He has Windows Media Center and shares his movies between upstairs and down on huge TVs. * Paul. He uses a bazillion devices connected to a projector in his basement with a kick-@$$ surround-sound system. Although I think he still uses regular DVDs, hooking up a PC to his rig is pretty trivial.

My new toys
My new LCD TV has inputs for a PC video connection, so all i would need to do is upgrade my PC card to HD. I am guessing I can port the surround sound card to my receiver and get surround sound as well.
I would think that the suggested netflix service would work a lot like a media server in your home network.
Media Center Extenders
Media Center Extenders plug into your TV with RCA cables and you use them like a cable box. They play movielink downloads.. but do not play itunes or Amazon..
So.. I use Movielink for downloads

IT’s Here
The Netflix service is now available. Same deal, you get 1 hour of viewing time for every dollar you spend on your subscription. It requires a “netflix viewer” to be downloaded to your PC in order to view the movies. I will have to see how this works out.
Sounds neat!
It sounds neat! I’ll have to try it out! If it’s a free add-on for the service I’m already paying for, woot! If it’s more money, no thanks.

Free
From the FAQ page, it is a free add on. You are just limited to the $ / hr rate of your subscription. I am interested to try the quality. I would like to be able to play the movie via my PC which i can connect to my LCD TV. I haven’t been able to find if the service is streaming or download. I would imagine that netflix would want streaming to cut down on the piracy, but on the flip side, that is a lot of bandwidth that they would have to support. It will be interesting to see how this plays out and if other companys or studios follow suit.
Alienware
For the Mediaphile who has $4K to waste…

Netflix Player
Caught this posting (http://tinyurl.com/5ed7aj) on the Netflix Player, which looks pretty cool for separating ‘download’ functionality from the PC and placing in on a traditional TV set.
