The Reason They Don’t Get Along

According to an LA Times article on left-wing vs. right-wing brain processes, it seems that human brains are actually wired differently and political preferences reflect this fact. In this test, conservatives would tend to favor an answer — even if it is the “wrong one” — more than liberals, who would tend to react to changes faster.

Really interesting.

  1. Right…(I mean, Left…).

I would be interested to read the actual study. What about the students in the middle of the continuum–were “moderate liberals” and “moderate conservatives” different? Did they control for gender, orientation, race, or age? Computer experience?

Here’s what the article actually says: some people are better at responding to W’s in a sea of M’s (or visa versa) than others. What? Who cares? How is that in any way reflective of an approach to Iraq policy or healthcare? Here’s a much better idea–hook kids up to an FMRI while they right essays on natural rights or the virtues of socialism. Look for differences there.

I had to love Sulloway. Here’s his best quote:

Based on the results, he said, liberals could be expected to more readily accept new social, scientific or religious ideas.

And you got that from an M and W experiment? Or from the dictionary? Isn’t that what most people mean today when they use the word “liberal?” He should have said, “Based on the results, liberals could be expected to be more liberal than conservatives.” Although, the only honest claim would have been, “Based on the results, liberals have better responses to changes between rapidly flashed M’s and W’s.”

I wonder how much of my taxes went to pay for this.
