I read Pete’s most recent blog entry over at Fiddley Gomme and found myself wondering: what is the transportation security administration’s policy regarding alcohol on-board airlines? Well, a little Googling and I found this little tidbit:
With the exception of medications, any amount of liquid including alcohol greater than three ounces must be packed in your checked baggage.
Liquids, including alcohol purchased after clearing the security checkpoint are permitted aboard aircraft.
Yeah. No liquids. So that means that the bottle of water that I carried with me last year when I flew is no longer allowed to be carried onto the aircraft or even make it through a security checkpoint. And with the advent of the “no locked bags” policy (except for patented, TSA-approved locks which can be opened with a commonly-available master key, this means baggage handlers are free to rummage through your luggage and take any alcohol or other valuables you happen to be carrying in your bags.
I understand the need for air safety. Really, I do. However, the Post-911 world of air travel sucks. Buy a one-way ticket, get a mandatory trouser-free, shoes-off screening. Have your baby’s breast milk get examined for explosives. Lose your bottle of Southern Comfort to an impound, never to be returned.
I think the solution is to fly naked.
When was the last time you flew?
Matt, when was the last time you flew? This has been going on for a while now.
Last summer…
Last summer. The ban went into effect August 30 2006, with notice to all TSA to enforce by September 27 2006.
I may have a chance to travel (job interviews and the like)… and banning me from carrying my bottled water onboard is just asinine…

Ahh..
But you see.. you may not carry the water past security. And I understand.. they had credible evidence a REAL plot was going to happen from Britain to here. They actually arrested people. It was real.
That being said, you may purchase a bottle of water (and the prices are not really too inflated) once inside the terminal. You may also purchase soda, starbucks, and maybe even booze (not sure on that one). You may carry these onto your plane. Its really not that bad.

It is… and isn’t
I have had the ‘pleasure’ to travel a bit for my recent employer. I find that I just have a travel set of things. The last ‘hmmpf’ I had was on a trip out to Chicago a month or so ago. I have been trying to not check baggage on the shorter trips. In my carry on was my toiletries kit in which i had a normal sized bottle of aerosol deodorant. I had to throw it away at the Security Checkpoint because it was considered a liquid of more than 3oz. – pretty irritating. I understand the concepts and the need for concern. Still doesn’t make it any less annoying. I now have my TSA approved size of just about everything for my trips though. I will admit, for the shorter trips it does make it easier to pack the mini-stuff vice the regular sized bottles.
