More digging out

Sorry to not post many interesting, insightful blog entries lately. We’re snowed into about two and a half feet of the white stuff, and I’m simply exhausted, mentally and physically, from all the snow shoveling.

All things considered, though, I’d rather shovel the snow myself than buy a snowblower. Snowblowers are expensive, take up a lot of garage space (which is in very short supply in our little townhouse), and only get used a few times per year. A snow shovel takes up much less space, and at over 400 calories burned per half-hour, although shoveling may be exhausting, it may well be one of the most calorie-intensive commonplace activities on the planet.

So now I’m shoveling my neighbor’s driveway, too!

  1. snow…

Let me say this. I HATE winter. It really does depress me. That said, I found that I really enjoyed moving all that snow from my driveway to the yard. Also, my yard now looks just as good as Lisa and Steve White’s 😉 I gave Dawn a ski lesson and rental for Christmas this year and she was scheduled to go on Friday so it was a bit of a disappointment to be shoveling and not shooshing. We managed to get up to Brighton today (Saturday) though and had a great time. New, deep snow is really something wonderful to ski on.

  2. Put on some skis

If you really want to burn up those calories, and discover how out of shape and feeble you are at the same time, then I would recommend snapping on a pair of cross-country skis and heading to the snow trails.

You wanna talk about exercise? I’m talking physical collapse in ten minutes.

People in MN told me that embracing the winter is the only way to enjoy the upper midwest. Terrible bromide to issue, I first felt, given the lack of activities available to embrace -10 with the wind chill. Then I discovered cross-country skiing. It is a fantastic combination of cardio, aerobic, anaerobic, and strength conditioning. I feel it goes beyond swimming, in terms of difficulty, because the changes in terrain and elevation provides for more challenge.

Forget about shoveling snow from the driveway. Get a snow blower for that. Instead, snap on some skis and get ready to sweat.

    1. Alpine is the way to go…

I prefer the type of skiing that involves a lift and high speed…

  3. I Hate Skiing…

Since my knee injuries, I have tried to ski, and just can’t. It is a frustrating experience, so i just don’t anymore. I rather just sit in the ski lodge and sip cocoa.
