Mmmm… pie…

All right, after a thoroughly enjoyable and mentally exhausting debate (congrats on Short Story status everyone), what movies are everyone looking forward to seeing this upcoming season?

High on my list:

Harry Potter IV – My favorite of the novels, the previews look @*#$(% righteous… definitely going to be there for the midnight showing. And is it wrong to have a crush on Emma Watson? It’s not a “boy I’d like me some of that” kind of crush, it’s a “she’s the kind of girl I’d like my son to bring home” kind of crush, if that makes sense.

Narnia — Loved the books, Lewis is still one of my favorite authors… and the previews also look phenomenal. WETA, those geniuses behind LoTR, have provided the environment of the film (I always hesitate to use “special effects” with WETA, their work is so artistically driven that somehow “special effects” sounds somehow crass). And, this is ironic, I saw “Constantine” last week and the one thing that really struck me was the fabulous actress who played Gabriel. She’s playing the White Witch. Lots to look forward to. I know Justin doesn’t want to see the movie because, and I quote “it has talking animals.” On one hand, I totally understand the worry, the last thing we want is Aslan meets Babe. On the other hand, how can we have Narnia without talking animals? That’s sort of one of the central points of the story, in’nit?

Zorro — I saw it this weekend, and my soul wept. Then it breathed white.

Serenity — coming out Dec. 20 on DVD, baby! Right in time for Christmas. Shiney!

Any other gems that folks are looking forward to? Early Oscar predictions, anyone?

  1. Many of the same…

I’m looking forward to many of the same movies you are.

Makes me feel as if I’m somehow pigeonholing myself into the “hopeless dork” category, though 😉 I mean, a movie with talking animals, a teen book, some Cowboys in Space movie based off a failed TV series, and Zorro?

I must say, actually, I really need to go see Zorro now that it’s in theaters. Between Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, that’s a metric crapload of “people too pretty to be real” on the screen. I’ve been meaning to see it, but I suspect that I’ll just be buying the DVD. Loved “The Mask of Zorro”.

Some other movies I want to go see soon:

    • Chicken Little. “RUUUNNNN!!” ’nuff said.
    • King Kong. More goodness from the maker of LOTR.
    • The Ringer. Smart guy pretending to be mentally disabled to make it into the Special Olympics? Now that’s something you don’t hear about every day.

Movies I have little interest in seeing:

    • Zathura. Do we really have to do Jumanji in Space?
    • Final Destination 3. Didn’t see the first two, don’t wanna see the third.
    • Aeon Flux. Charlize Theron is pretty, but just annoys me for some reason. And the movie, despite the hot-chicks-kicking-butt factor, looks pretty dumb.
    • Cheaper By The Dozen 2. The first one was entertaining, but a second one? How much can you beat a dead horse? Big family, unique problems, blah blah blah…

    1. Musical turned move..

With as many musical people on here, I’m surprised no one mentioned Rent. I saw it on the stage and am interested in seeing how it translates on the big screen. BTW Final Destination was a good movie, but I think I can wait for the DVD to see part 3… — Bryan

      1. I Can’t Stand The Music

Bryan, have you seen the show on stage? I didn’t like the soundtrack at all. Even with the touching backdrop on the show’s creation I couldn’t bring myself to appreciate the music from a stand-alone perspective. Maybe I need to see the show, and hear the music as a character development support tool, rather than a singing-in-the-aisles function?

        1. Stage show is better

After seeing Rent on stage, I got the soundtrack… Doesn’t do it justice. I went (not by my choice) to see Zorro over the weekend. I’ll admit, it was alot better than I expected. Granted my expectations weren’t very high. I’m still waiting for The Chronicles of Narnia and The Producers. And waiting for DVD for Yours, Mine & Ours… The first one was good, but this one looks as bad as some of the other remakes i’ve seen lately. — Bryan

      2. You’re right, Bryan, I

You’re right, Bryan, I totally forgot Rent. Normally, I’m fairly wishy washy when it comes to that particular show. I remember seeing it on stage and crying my eyes out… it’s a tremendously powerful story with a ton of heart.

However, I also feel it’s been overhyped over the past ten years. It has its flaws, but still a phenomenal show.

So far, the trailers for the film look like a very faithful recreation of the spirit of the musical. With the exception of Taye Diggs and Rosario Dawson, every single character is played by the original cast member from the Broadway premiere.

My prediction is that it will be wonderful. Just in time for Christmas. 🙂

  2. Wal-Mart Documentary

First, I’ve been to 3 movies this entire year, and they were all documentaries. I’m hoping to see the new documentary that portrays Wal-Mart as an evil corporation (a subject for a thread by itself). I believe it has only been screened in NYC to date, but a bunch of watchdog groups are raising money to put it on screens in major metro areas nationwide by end of the year.

Second, if the prior movie was any indiciation, “Mask of Zorro” will be shown on TNT every weekend night, starting in one month.
