Recommend a Media Player?

So I was prompted to upgrade my Windows Media Player to version 10. And the new thing isn’t working. Crashes everytime I boot. No problem, I think, uninstall, download the install.exe from microsoft.com, reinstall.

You can’t uninstall WMP. There’s no uninstall function. And then you can’t physically delete from Program Files. I’m sure this thing is spyware.

Anyway, can anybody recommend another XP-friendly free media player for download?

Thanks!

  1. WinAMP

I use winamp. On GNU/Linux, I use NoAtun or XMMS.

However, I won’t assume using an alternative media player will solve your problem. If WMPlayer is crashing because of, for instance, a corrupted DLL, well, when playing the same type of media, alternative players will also use the same DLL and probably have similar problems.

    1. It Just Bombs

It just bombs. Freezes. “Program is not responding” kind of thing. Shall we send informatin to Microsoft? No, do not send any information of any kind to Microsoft.

It happens when you engage the drop-down menuing, which means there’s just something wacky.

That’s why we have Nullsoft! I like them. You guys were right, Winamp really kicks the llama’s *baaaaaaa*.

  2. I luv my Mike Rowe soft

According to Microsoft, Windows Media Player 10 is not an application as much as it’s an “Operating System upgrade”. Their method of unistallation is to roll back the OS using System Restore.

Now I bet you didn’t make a System Restore point just before you installed WMP 10, eh? Didn’t think so, and now yer screwed. Your best bet is to figure out why the WMP 10 is crashing and fix it.

    Hence my previous message.

    Winamp rocks, btw

    1. Hey while we’re at it..

Half of the files that get played in my Quicktime PLayer are all jumbly and have purple boxes and green boxes and stuff. Generally I think they’re Mpeg files. I don’t know what to do about that.

      1. Try re-installing QT

Try re-installing Quicktime. Worked well for me when I had a similar, weird problem.

        1. tried..

Tomorrow I’ll try uninstalling and then reinstalling.

I used to have this problem if I was unknowingly running quicktime and another media player at the same time, but now it happens like 1/2 the time.

Has it really been like 3 weeks since we chatted?
