Tony Dungee is an idiot

If you arrived here by searching for “Tony Dungee”, you probably are more interested in Tony Dungy‘s bio on Wikipedia than this several-year-old article. Due to the overwhelming number of foul comments posted here due to Dungy’s team winning the superbowl in 2007, this entry is closed for comments. —Matthew, proprietor.

Recap: Before Monday Night Football, ABC usually has a 90-second vignette starring football players and ABC stars, to entertain you and promote ABC’s shows. This week, Terrell Owens, wide receiver and notorious attention-monger, did a little clip with Nicholette Sheridan, star of the epic drama “Desperate Housewives”. Nicholette, wearing only a towel, throws herself at Terrell, who rebukes her because he has a game to play.

Until she drops the towel, then he tell shis teammates he’s sorry, but he’s gonna have to miss the game tonight.

Pan to two more stars of “Desperate Housewives” watching and lamenting about how bad soap operas have become.

That’s it. No nudity, I think h*ll was said once. Nothing you can’t see on any other TV show. And the nation IS IN AN UPROAR!!! How absolutely stupid!

Tony Dungee, black coach of the Indianapolis Colts, even went so far as you bring out a charge of racism, saying that Terrell, a black man, was bing manipulated and stereotyped for being an over-sexed athlete.

What????!!!

How in the world is having a beautiful blonde woman get naked and jump into your arms a slap in the face of being black? Tony Dungee has done more harm to the black cause by making such a stupid statement. Now you got Bubba and Joe Bob saying “See, they bring the race card into EVERYTHING!”

I heard a great point on the radio last night. Here Congress is easing ethics rules on their own (see DeLay, Tom) whilst raining down on ABC for something totally harmless.

Please please please please please let common sense and intelligence return to DC someday…

  1. Right up there with the nipple

Yeah, I’ve been hearing the fuss over it on conservative talk radio (though I don’t watch any TV to see it anywhere else). Right up there with Janet Jackson’s nipple, it’s much ado about nothing, in my opinion. But I bet Desparate Housewives gets amazing ratings over the next few weeks.

Maybe I’m just jaded, or the fact I don’t watch TV plays in here, but I just don’t care anymore. Parents, choose good entertainment for your kids. If enough parents opt out of watching shows to which they object, change happens. If not, it doesn’t. Making a fuss about it makes kids think it’s a really big deal, when it shouldn’t be.

  2. I Couldn’t Agree More

To the Tony Dungee comment, which is indicative of the response of many of those working within the NFL: SHUT UP YOU IDIOTS.

Might have been two Thanksgivings ago, when I saw a steroid-addicted, 325 lb. lineman laying on the ground with his neck broken, because he plays in the one of the most violent sports in the world. Yes, violence. Aggressive, terrible violence.

And this is the nation’s second-most watched sporting event. It’s entertainment. It’s not about the purity of the sport anymore; and if you don’t believe me, check how the NFL has turned itself from a live-action sport to a televised sport. The NFL is an entertainment business, run by entertainment lawyers, that makes it’s money off television.

So when you have this violent televised entertainment sport buffered by a sexual vignette….what’s the problem? You work for a business that lives off viewer ratings. And the sexual thing is harmless compared to the violence thing.

(On another note, you want your kids growing up being told that sex is terrible but violence is okay? Talk about a backwards, repressed country.)

So, again, you have viewers in an uproar about nudity and sexual overtones, but meanwhile you have gorillas out there breaking arms and legs. Makes no sense to me why these people in the sport are screaming and crying. If they don’t like it, go work for another league that cares more about live sport entertainment. And shut up because you sound like whiny idiots.

    1. As If To Accentuate My Point

The NBA goes and has an all-out brawl involving the players and fans.

This is why soccer is the greatest sport in the world.

        1. Civil

Soccer is the most civil sport out there, but who can help it if the fans decide to go for an all-out brawl?

We’re talking about the NBA players running into the stands and starting fights with the fans.

      1. ESPN

If you watched ESPN’s coverage of the brawl, it was one of the most biased pieces of journalism I’ve seen in a while.

They came out and DEFENDED the players, saying they “understood” why a player would go into the stands after a fan. Apparently, get this, the fans were being a little boorish. Ron Artest was having a little moment of rest after a team brawl broke out when a fan threw a cup and it hit him in the chest.

Then HE GOES INTO THE STANDS after the fan, and all Hades breaks loose…and ESPN defends him, saying it’s the fans fault. Of course, ESPN has a big $$$ with the NBA….hmmm.

I agree 100% that fans shouldn’t be allow to throw things. Ask Philly about the batteries. BUT, the players should never, EVER go into the stands. They’re told this from day 1.

Boo-hoo, it’s SOOO hard to be an NBA player, with fans taunting you, your wife, kids and girlfriends. Cry me a river into your multimillion dollar contract. You don’t want to be harassed at games, subject to the media, etc, etc? Retire, give the money back, and live on a farm in Montana. Otherwise, suck it up, play the game, and remember it’s the fans who pay your salary.

        1. Beyond Biased

Weed, I caught Sportscenter this morning and couldn’t believe the absurdity of some of the ESPN commentator’s statements. They were backing the players, even suggesting that the league commissioner stand behind the players and not issue suspensions. I’m not surprised, because ESPN is certainly not journalism. They’ve turned sporting news into another entertainment form.

But how can anyone support the players? I think these guys should get kicked out of the league. However, I’m the guy that also thinks the NHL should ban fighting and retire anyone that throws a punch.

          1. Star players…

I think if it was only a no-name, fourth-stringer basketball player involved, you’d hear calls for his sacking from everybody. But Artest, apparently (I wouldn’t know from firsthand watching, I only read about it) really carries his team. At least for him I suspect the penalty will be light.

            Matthew P. Barnson

          2. If the NHL banned fighting,

If the NHL banned fighting, it would have even less viewers than the 5 people left that watch it now.

  3. tony dungee is quite the oppo

tony dungee is quite the opposite. i knew tony many years ago when he played with the steelers. the meek shall inherit the earth is what the bible says and that in a nut shell IS tony dungee. by the way you need to learn how to spell.

  4. Congrats…

For the moment, your blog posting is #1 on Google for “Tony Dungee”. So dang many people have hit this page today that it’s skewing my statistics. What did he do recently that he’s suddenly so popular?

      1. Shame

It’s a shame about his son.

Yet, at the same time, I found myself reflecting on this the other day. The wife of a guy I dislike because he’s an idiot recently died. Do I feel an obligation to like him more due to his loss? Or do I still think he’s an idiot, but one deserving of some sympathy for both being an idiot and losing a spouse?

Ahh, these precious, if difficult, choices.

(Note: I realize I may come off as callous. I’m really not, in real life, I’m a mighty sympathetic guy. But it’s a tough quandary because I’m forced to work with this idiot, and I feel bad for him, but I don’t like him any better and sometimes feel guilty for his double-whammy.)

        Matthew P. Barnson

        1. Ouch

Sympathetic – Yes Guilty – No Like him more – No

You just may want to cut him some more slack for a few days, that’s all.

        2. Yeah..

Often you see rivals and warring family members coming together at times of loss.

In those times, you can more easily see the other person as a person, and not the idea (“idiot”) that you’ve made them in your head. And then, they’re justa flawed human being, and its easier to look past falws.

  5. Tony Dungee

this is the coach and he is not playing the game. his job is to keep the team focused. Any disruptions motivates him to address it. He is about to accomplish a milestone. Additionally I would hope that you would remain constant so that you do not say anything that you will reqret later. Just because he is about to win the super bowl does not make him the best coach but it does associate him with the elite. His moment of success should be shared with everyone, even those who are about t lose for who will be the best team in 2007? I sincerely hope that his recent loss is not connected to some sick person doing something stupid for the cause of football.

    1. Uhm, yeah…

      And your point being…?

You do realize this post was made over a year ago, not right after his son was killed? You do know that, right? I mean, you’re not the type of idiot who wouldn’t check a date stamp before calling someone else an idiot, are you? Surely you’d make sure you’re idiot-free before labelling someone else an idiot, because the pot shouldn’t call the kettle black.

      1. That reminds me of an

That reminds me of an unforunate incident with Richard Gere and the Today Show. He was being interviewed about his love of horseback riding, and someone made a playful question about “Do you fall off a lot?” and he responded, in an equally playful, sarcastic tone: “No. I know how to ride a horse thanks.”

The Today show, as it turns out, is prerecorded. Most people don’t know that. And it just so happened that they aired that segment the day after Christopher Reeve died.

Richard Gere, who I’ve never had any real problem with, had to spend a TON of money and effort doing PR damage control, all because the people at the Today show were too stupid to pull that portion of the interview.

  6. Dungee

Dear Weed, You need to get the “weeds” out of your brain. YOU don’t have an ounce of “intelligence and common sense,” And please, reread what you write before you submit it anywhere. You sound like a fifth grader.

    1. Debating…

I’m debating… do I allow the inflammatory comment to stand, or do I yank it?

If I let it stand, we get to see Weed in his prime, firing off yet another witty reply to an anonymous drive-by poster.

If I delete it, I’ve just censored something which isn’t specifically against board rules.

Eh, I’ll let it stand, and see if Weed feels like a riposte or not.

Oh, on that note, Anonymous, please re-read what you write before you submit it here. In general, using a comma to indicate the end of a sentence is confusing.

    2. HAHAHAHA!!!

FUNNY! Did you even read the thread? That post is over 2 years old, predating the tragic death of Tony’s son.

      You are a funny person.

    3. 5th Grade was the best 3 years of my life

I understand your Colts made the Super Bowl last night, and in a fit of joy you decided to search the internet for information about said Colts. I understand you found this site and it had a negative post about the Colt’s coach, Tony Dungee. I understand in your joyous celebration that such a thing just could not be tolerated, so you replied.

What I don’t understand is your point.

Can you please reply and tell me WHY I don’t have an ounce of “intelligence and common sense”, or perhaps why I sound like a fifth grader? Having a nickname like Weed, I expect your first comment and ignore it. Everyone misinterprets my nickname and feels obligated to make the same jokes, and expectedly, although sadly, you’re no different.

As stated, I posted this years ago. I did just re-read what I wrote and I thought it still made wonderful sense. There was a typographical error, but I know professional writers who make the same errors, so I don’t lose sleep over that. That commercial was funny! I laughed. Dungee complained and brought up the race card??!!

So anyway, enjoy your victory, and your imminent defeat at the hands of the Bears. The Irsay Curse will not let the Colts win the Super Bowl because he stole the Colts out of Baltimore. But please reply and tell me why you felt the need to post such detailed and well-thought out attacks about me.

Perhaps I should complain that the current commercial where Dungee is radioing to his player what to say to a girl in a car while at the end of a date portrays football players as dumb and unable to act for themselves. Of course, that’s acceptable. What we needed is Parcells to make that commercial with a black football player. Then the fun would start.
