Got free tickets to see Mötley Crüe tonight at the Usana Amphitheater. Never was a fan of the band in high school, though, which was the last time I remember hearing about them (circa 1991 or so). Ahh, well, I’ll be the guy standing and singing “watermelon” to all the lyrics ‘cuz I don’t know them.

Crue Review
So overall review: they rocked, hard. It was a fun concert to attend. One thing I really liked is that they went and played a really solid, long set, then for the encore they did just one song, thanked us, and left the stage. This is in contrast to Linkin Park, who played a 45-minute set and did three encores… all for right around exactly the same amount of time. LP’s approach feels really artificial to me, while Motley Crue handled it really straightforward.
One thing that beggars description is how women lose their mind over Tommy Lee. And how in the world James — the very fat, very drunk fellow who scored me the ticket — managed to persuade the girl behind us to flash him. And how loud 20,000 people can be when they are screaming “Shout! Shout! Shout! Shout at the devil!” in unison.
Here’s what I twittered last night during the concert. Yes, I blogged live from my seat. Reads in reverse order, of course.

Boggles My Mind
It boggles my mind that more than 10 people showed up from the concert. From the pics it looks as though several thousand people were there. Wow.
You would have had to pay me to go. And even then I would have likely turned down the $$.
Capacity…
The crowd was at capacity. The Usana Amphitheater has room for a total of 20,000: Seven thousand seats, and 14,000 on the grass. Almost every square inch was filled with people, so I’d estimate the crowd was right around 20,000 people.
Several times, the band seemed struck by how many people there were in the audience and commented on it. The last time the USANA Amphitheater was this full was the Journey concert a few weeks ago.
Utah, it seems, is stuck in the 1990s.
On the plus side, given the huge turnout, Crue said onstage that they wanted to open their tour next year in Salt Lake City. I guess that would be cool… I’m not a fan, just enjoyed the concert.
The Tit E. Cam was an unusual twist, however. That feature of a Crue concert may be incentive enough for many people to attend.
