okay, here’s the sitch.
JJ Abrhams, creator of Lost and Alias (And Felicity), and director of MI3, has been given the reins to the Star Trek Mythos. Rick Berman, overseer of all things TREK since its creator got sick in 1989, had been ousted (Not a bad thing, all the good Ds9 was overseen by Piller and Moore). We’ve covered this.
The plot, so far, seems to be a prequel.. set in the Kirk / Spock days, and possibly early in their careers. JJ has said it will be a reinvention of sorts, but will fit in the established continuity. It is scheduled for 2008.
My hope is that JJ used his ablility to craft twists and turns, and to create buzz, while enlisting young casts with emotional ties to the plots, well, I just hope its good. And I will shre my thoughts about what i’ve heard so far, but what are your thoughts?
I just…
I just thank the Maker* that I won’t have to see William Shatner in a girdle again. Oy!

* Anakin, dude. Get with it, it’s all about The Force as a Religion now. Wait, hang on, I’m cross-pollinating series’! I should be talking about the Prime Directive as life philosophy, or Q as an agent of Satan…
Denny Crane!
You want to see some hard-core Shatner? Try to stomach an ep of Boston Legal. The rest of the show is blah, but whenever Shatner utters ‘Denny Crane’ it makes the rest tolerable.
Also excited
It’s been a while since my Trek convention-going days, and it’s certainly been years since I was reading the never-ending series of novels, but back when Trek was still in its heyday, there were lots of great stories from the Kirk/Spock early years. Lots of good material to work with there.
That being said, I’d hate for ST XI to get tagged with the reviews MI:III received, that it was Alias starring Tom Cruise in place of Sydney Bristow. I’ve not seen the new movie – expended my monthly movie-going chip on X-Men, so worth it – but based on what I read I thought it was unfair.
Lost rocks, and Alias’ first season rocked, so if JJ Abrams can bring some of that to bear for Trek, who knows?
As for casting, I’m thinking Matt Damon in the Kirk role.
MI3
Dont know anyone who saw it that didnt like it.

seriously i need a second career
OK, literally, I pulled that Damon thing out of thin air. And then I saw this headline ‘Matt Damon as Captain Kirk?’ which linked to a story http://insider.tv.yahoo.com/insidetrack/malkin/.
So, I’ll be charging for these sorts of predictions from this point on.
Tim
yeah…
He’d be a good choice.. but would he do it? And also importantly.. would he do a multi-pic deal. A great recasting followed by another recasting isnt a good idea.
